TM44 Air Conditioning Assessment

Admittedly, this is not the most inspiring titles to a post, but it is one that caught my attention. The office where I work get very hot (As there are a number of bodies in very close contact with each other and we all work on computers).  Air conditioning is really important to us as it is the difference between passing out and working comfortably.  Did you know that these units had to be serviced regularly by the fire department?  Neither did I.  So what can we find out?

If you don’t get your air conditioning unit inspected every 5 years it can be a fine of up to £300 (Find out more on the government website).  It also comes with a recommendation on how to improve the system and what you can do to get some more energy savings.  When you think about it, it's a pretty good system which allows building owners to gain more energy savings and allows them to keep a safety record on what is going on.

The thing that got me was Paul Evans asked all of the fire brigades in the UK about their air conditioning records (Don’t ask me, I really don't know). What it does, is gives us an insight into what the fire are doing about air conditioning and what they are doing to make themselves safe.  So he asked them:

Q. Are you responsible for any buildings with more than 12kw of air conditioning present?
Q. Who is the responsible person for ensuring that your buildings are inspected and reports lodged, please provide the name, address, and telephone number of the responsible person.
Q. If your TM44 Air Conditioning Inspection Certificates are in place, what is their expiry date?
Q. What was the order value of the works placed with the Company who undertook the work?
Q. How many Certificates were produced?
Q. Was the TM44 Inspector independent as required under the Regulations?
Q. Name the Inspector Organisation.

And so the answers came from the various different brigades. I am only going to look at the Welsh forces only. You can find a full answer on the respective requests (As it is too much to fully reproduce here.  You can find the South Wales Fire Service response, North Wales Fire Response, and Mid and West Wales response on their respective links.

What is so interesting is that the fire department have to have fire safety assessments on themselves and that you can ask for a copy of these too. You can see how safe fire brigade are. You can also see how safe the fire department is, by their own standard.  Which makes me think, what else can we ask the fire service for.
