Police complaints

A little while back I looked at South Yorkshire Police and how they have been investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) for various different things.  The thing is this got me thinking about complaints made against the police forces that we have in the United Kingdom. The police are only as good as we allow them to be, and if they make a mistake then we should be able to complaint about them and get recompense. So let’s have a little look at the results.

A quick request to the IPCC showed that the top 10 most complained forces (they also showed that the information is available on their website).  This was an interesting one because if you look at the results the Met had by far the most complaints. (Results are below).  What was interesting to me was that no Welsh force was in this list.  This was a pleasant surprise.  So this got me thinking, how many of the above complaints were upheld. Let’s find out.

The thing is that this made me think again, since the Welsh Forces were not in the list, how do they rank according to the others?  Again a quick request will help us out on this matter:

Name of Force
Complaints Made
Complaints Upheld
Percentage Upheld
737
113
15.33
940
75
7.98
1221
51
4.18

This is pretty good going, isn't it? How does this measure up against the complaints from the IPCC against Welsh Forces?

Name of Force
Complaints Made
Complaints Upheld
Percentage Upheld
Gwent Police
393
70
18
North Wales Police
400
65
16
South Wales Police
428
75
27
Dyfed Powys Police
32
57
18

What about against the complaints made against the IPCC to the top 10 forces?  I was sent the official table about this, so you can have a little look on that one for yourself. The thing that this shows is that these complaints are being looking into AND that anyone can see them.  It does amaze me how many complaint are made and yet not upheld. Which means that we need to now know the reason for the number being so low...
