A licensed premises is simply a premises which is allowed to serve alcohol. It can do this as a pub, off licence OR a restaurant Great eh? The thing is there are tonnes of places that can do this in your area (For example, your local shop can sell alcohol). The question is how many? Wouldn't it be interesting to find this out? So I did!
The thing is in researching for this one, I found something else out. You know the local clubs in your area (I mean the working men's clubs, ex serviceman clubs) they have a separate licence from the normal pubs (It’s part of the reason that the drinks are so cheap as they are licensed to do this).
And so I asked all Welsh Councils the following questions:
- How many premises are licensed to sell alcohol in your authority (Premises Licences), at time of writing.
- How many premise licences were applied for from 01/01/15 to 01/01/16
- How many of these new applicants were rejected in the above time frame.
- How many premises have a Club Premises Certificates in your authority at time of writing
- How many Club Premises Certificates were applied for from 01/01/15 to 01/01/16
- How many of these new applicants were rejected in the above time frame.
The reasons I asked about the new premises was that I wanted to know how fast the market was growing in that area. Also the reasons for the number of rejects is because I wanted to see which was the least likely place to gain a license. Just to make you aware, I am doing this in two sections. The first is the premises and the second is the clubs.

What was interesting about this was the amount of rejections. It seems, in most locations, once you have asked for the licence you have pretty much got it (Which either means that are a lot of hoops to go through OR something else). The thing was also the amount of clubs. There seem to be no growth in the Club's business. Other than Caerphilly, No authority had any new. Until I had a response from RCT. One club refused. Makes you wonder why doesn't it?
